This is the fourth and final installment of the 1923 Indy 500 race cars and drivers vintage real photo postcards. All three of the old photo postcards show Packard race cars and the first one shows “Joe Boyer, daring millionaire pilot of Detroit, Michigan at the wheel of his ‘Packard Special’ “. He finished 18th after 59 laps due to differential problems. Photo by W. Frank Jones of Indianapolis Indiana.
The next real photo postcard shows “Ralph De Palma at the wheel of his “Packard Special”. DePalma won the 1915 Indy 500 and finished 15th in 1923 due to a head gasket problem.
The last old real photo postcard shows the whole Packard team with Joe Boyer on the left, Ralph De Palma at the wheel, Dairo Resta and Col. J. G. Vincent, engineer on the right. Dario Resta won the 1916 Indy 500 and finished 14th in 1923 due to differential problems after 87 laps. This was a great driving team with two previous Indy 500 wins but the Packards let them down in the 1923 race. All of these postcards are available in my Indiana listings along with 10,000 additional postcards on my website Moody’s Postcards.
